حامد الگار (به انگلیسی: Hamid Algar) استاد مطالعات اسلامی و زبان فارسی در دانشگاه کالیفرنیا، برکلی می‌باشد.
زندگینامه[ویرایش | ویرایش مبدأ]
زمینه تخصصی الگار تاریخ تشیع در ایران (مخصوصا قرن‌های 19 و 20 میلادی) و تصوف (مخصوصا نقشبندیه و پیشرفت آن در آسیای میانه، هندوستان، کردستان، ترکیه و بالکان) می‌باشد. الگار مدرک لیسانس و دکترا را از دانشگاه کمبریج اخذ کرد و از دانشگاه تهران دکترای افتخاری دریافت کرده‌است. او بیش از صد مقاله در دانشنامه ایرانیکا تالیف کرده‌است.
الگار که متولد انگلیس بود، بعدها به دین اسلام و سپس به مذهب تشیع گرویده‌است. وی همچنین آثاری از متفکران سیاسی معاصر شیعه را به انگلیسی ترجمه کرد. از جمله کتاب ولایت فقیه اثر سید روح‌الله خمینی و آثاری از علی شریعتی، مرتضی مطهری، سید محمود طالقانی.
نوشته‌های او به زبان‌های مختلف دنیا ترجمه و منتشر شده است.
